Jen Nossokoff, Only Supervisor Candidate Citywide Endorsed by Everytown for Gun Safety, Expresses Concern Over Recent Shooting Near Galileo High School and SFUSD's Communication

San Francisco, CA – Jen Nossokoff, a candidate for District 1 Supervisor in San Francisco and the only supervisorial candidate citywide endorsed by Everytown for Gun Safety, released a statement today following the recent shooting near Galileo High School, expressing deep concern over both the incident and the San Francisco Unified School District’s (SFUSD) lack of direct communication with families.

"As a parent of children in SFUSD, I was alarmed to learn about the shooting near Galileo High School through social media instead of directly from the school district. In moments like these, timely and transparent communication with families is not just important—it is essential," said Nossokoff.

Nossokoff, who has a personal history with the issue of school shootings, continued, "I was in middle school just 60 miles away from Columbine when the tragedy unfolded in 1999. Now I have a child in school, and ending school shootings has become an even more urgent personal mission of mine. The safety of our children in schools should be the highest priority, and it is crucial that SFUSD not only implements strong safety measures but also communicates effectively with parents and guardians during emergencies."

The shooting, which occurred on August 21, 2024, at the intersection of North Point and Polk streets near Galileo High School, resulted in a lockdown of the school. The victim, a teenage student, was injured but is in stable condition. The police investigation is ongoing.

"As the only citywide supervisor candidate endorsed by Everytown for Gun Safety, I am committed to advocating for policies that will protect our children from gun violence and ensure that our schools are secure environments where students can learn without fear," added Nossokoff. "I will also hold SFUSD accountable for improving their communication strategies so that no parent ever has to learn about a school emergency from social media."

Nossokoff’s campaign focuses on community safety, health equity, and sustainable transportation, with a strong emphasis on creating safe spaces for all San Franciscans.
